SMART4BUILD - buildings as active energy nodes
Buildings don't just consume energy - they can generate, store and intelligently steer it. SMART4BUILD turns buildings into active nodes in the energy system, trialled across three climate zones.

What it's about
Photovoltaics on the roof, storage in the basement, an intelligent building energy management in between: SMART4BUILD connects these building blocks so that buildings respond flexibly to the grid - as active energy nodes instead of passive consumers.
For this to carry in Stockholm just as in Bilbao, the control must handle very different climate, construction and consumption realities. At its core this is a data and AI question: capturing sensor data reliably, bringing it together and translating it into control decisions.
What makes it special
A solution that is trialled across three climate zones, data-driven in its control and designed for transferability. Data-driven optimisation that brings comfort, costs and climate targets together - instead of playing one against the other.
Where it works
The consortium reaches from KTH Stockholm through Aalborg and De Montfort University to NTUA Athens and UPV/EHU in the Basque Country - deliberately covering different climate and construction realities.
What Xient brings
As partner, Xient is responsible for the data side on which intelligent control builds:
- Data & Analytics: architecture, data quality and analytics - the basis for turning sensor data into reliable decisions.
- Artificial intelligence: models for the predictive control of generation, storage and load.
- AI governance: traceable, verifiable procedures - important wherever automation intervenes in building operation.
From research into your value creation
What makes buildings energy nodes is at its core a data and AI question - exactly our field. The methods flow back into our data & analytics and AI governance, carried by European, sovereign infrastructure.
Consortium & locations
